The birth of an underground

Submitted by lbunderground on Wed, 2008-11-05 18:27.

The surprising results of the Los Banos city elections has divided the city into two groups. One group wants to make our city just like San Jose, and the other group wants to stop large annexations of land for new homes. School connections combined with developer's money and the combined force of two incumbents could not be overcome.

The occupation of our town continues and I am now forced to go underground to preserve my position within the city but still shed light on the agenda that is not in the best interest of all.

Some will tell you that with this election we can now "Make Los Banos a great place to live" To those people I say, Los Banos is and has been a great place to live. I pray we can keep it that way.

Backhanded Annexations

Annexations are not per se a bad thing, nor is growth. As in my story (Mr. Mayor Gets An Annex), the proposed annexation of the lands between the present city limits and Pioneer are being pushed by a developer who has been unable to obtain that land by other means. He has sold members of the City Council on the idea that they can generate additional city funds by annexing large tracts against the wishes of the people who actually own the land.

Those politicians have dollar signs dancing in their eyes. There is a proposed sports complex to be built on Ward Road on the drawing board at City Hall to be paid for with the annexation and developer fees from these properties, designed in conjunction with the developer who hasn't yet purchased that land.

When the land gets annexed, the present owners will be forced to come up with annexation fees and will see their irrigation water bill increase due to the contracts they have with CCID. Their current contract call for higher tier pricing if the water is delivered within city limits.

This in effect will price the owners out of farming. The developer will step in and "save" them by buying the land they didn't want to sell originally to this same developer.

Annexations are not necessarily a bad thing, but our city should not be in the underhanded business of assisting forced sales to developers. If they want to declare eminent domain, have the guts to do so directly.

The voters of this city have aided and abetted this forced sale by re-electing the two behind this scheme, along with a new council member who will no doubt follow their lead. It takes three votes to screw a farm family.

Also

That farm family can not vote in the city elections that could impact their life.
